Focus on: My Doctor's appointment
I saw my doctor today, following last week's blood work. He was impressed by my weight loss. All measurements were better - some very much better - except one: Blood sugar. This floored me.
I have type II Diabetes. I do not have to take any medication for it, and the indicators are that if I keep my weight down and keep up my low carb diet, maybe I won't have this problem - or at least, I'll still be diabetic, but it won't be a health concern - for long. This is the word from Dr. LoDolce. Should having a Dr. "Sweet Thing" working on my diabetes be a concern?
On the other hand, although my blood sugar was slightly high (107) my A1C test dropped by 13.5% from 4 months ago, well under the range associated with diabetes - so one test says not so good, another says good.
On the topic of medications, I am dropping one, going back on one. My doctor believes that I need to take statins (I have been taking them for about 5 years now, although I stopped, on my own, last month). Statins are a concern for me, since they seem over-hyped and the only groups that don't find a problem with them seem to be the AMA and the Pharmaceutical Industry that makes and promotes them. But he was adamant - saying he couldn't make me take the pill, but he strongly recommended I do. So I will.
My blood pressure was excellent, every single measure improved.
Visit summary: The doctor is pleased at my weight loss, says it is the most important thing to my health. Nixed the idea of dropping the statin drug. Agreed to drop the Niaspan. Will continue on HBP medication, hypothyroid medication (I have taken it for almost 25 years), and vitamin D supplement and re-start the statin. Sigh. The bloodwork came back fabulously with every single thing improved except the blood sugar level - which was the same as 4 months ago. My blood pressure was excellent (a perfect 120/70).
As you can see, today I am over 200 pounds, and I'm unconcerned. There are a few factors that explain that: Resetting to a normal diet (higher carbs) now that I've finished inductance, recovering from my first carb-load, and lastly, taking a week off from my PAGG supplements. So, no worries, no cares about weight, because, after all, it still represents progress, it is the lowest weight I've ever been at on a Monday this year.

That is so weird. Everything on my blood tests came back normal, my blood presssure was 110/70, my blood sugar 99, except my weight which has remained exactly the same for 5 years. No matter what I have done. I have to have another stress test cos I have been having some burning sensations when I walk. Nothing like before. Also, I had a caratid ultrasound which shows a slightly higher amount of plaque which could just be due to error and is still in the range that is treated with meds. I am feeling kind of hopeless, which is usually what I feel after seeing my cardiologist. I thought I had lost some weight. Oh well. 107 seems like pre diabetes, not diabetes. Did they do that sugar test? Love you, Joan
The good news for you is that, while your weight wasn't down, it wasn't up, and everything else was good, as far as your bloodwork. Your ultrasound results are pretty typical for a person of your age and medical history. I am most concerned by the discomfort you feel when walking.
As for me, you are right, that 107 would be pre-diabetes - but the diagnosis that I was diabetic was actually done about 8 months ago, and yes, they did the sugar test (then). What that number, which was a little down from 4 months ago, showed was that, despite the weight loss, I was still insulin-resistant. However, there was a huge improvement in my A1C, which measures the amount of average blood sugar over a longer period of time (not as sensitive a test as fasting glucose) and that number dropped solidly out of diabetic territory into normal or healthy - it had been high and corroborated the diagnosis.
My doctor just wants me to keep losing, or even just maintain my weight loss. He's convinced that everything wrong with me will be better, or at least, much less of a health threat, if I stay in a normal weight range.
OK now I understand. Yeah, I'm not really worried about the discomfort. It is not like before- that was serious pain- and I can walk up and down 3 flights of stairs without it. I just thought I would mention it and check it out. Just in case. I thought of not mentioning it - but I did cos I love you and the rest of my family.
