May 13, 2012: Post 134, Day 134 - Fast Day

Today was a beautiful Spring day. I took advantage of it by going to Frank Stepanek's Wailin' Trailer Studio to give moral support to J. (singer/songwriter/guitarist/good friend/leader of i am Fool) laying down vocal tracks for the instrumentals we recorded on April Fool's Day.

These sessions are fun - Frank and J. are both good hangs, and both great talents. I didn't contribute much - I gofered some coffee and tea, and for the two tracks I was there for, gave a smidgen of creative input that was helpful (I hope).

My reward was a CD of dub tracks I recorded the bass on there a year or so earlier. They were for a reggae singer/songwriter I worked with for a while.

Listening in the car later, I have to say, I think I did a good job. I was happy with my parts. That's the certain good feeling - of satisfaction and accomplishment - I get from music and almost nowhere else.

Not that I don't have feelings of satisfaction in other parts of my life, but none like that, the feeling of creating something that contributes so directly to a greater whole. That feeling doesn't happen for me when I'm creating on my own. It's why I hate to practice bass and love to play in a group. Why I never pursue bass as a solo instrument (and, in general, when I can, don't take solos in a group).

I listened on my way to a concert at the Oncenter. I have never been there, and it was very impressive. My friend Al had given me a ticket to see Gordon Lightfoot. The concert was a pleasure, the seats were great, the sound was good, and although Gord's vocals are noticeably weaker than the last time I saw him (more than 35 years ago, he's 77 now!), he gave a better performance tonight than the last one I remembered. He has loosened up a bit and mellowed over the years.

The end of a wonderful day.

Yesterday was cheat day. Lots of sugar and fat, a fair amount of protein, not too much (enough?) water. An atypically low after-cheat weight.

Food Log
Breakfast
Skipped.

Lunch
Skipped.

Dinner
After the concert, I broke my fast at Denny's, because it was Mother's Day, and Mama Nancy's ("Open 24 hours a day 7 days a week") closed at 10pm. Grrrr. I had a "Meat Lover's Omelet" and a paltry amount of broccoli. Then I went home and had a Spring Mix and red cabbage salad with balsamic vinegar and some baby carrots with home-made spicy mayonnaise.

I think I did tell you I got an Iphone, too. I'm not sure how ICloud works but my email is joankell@me.com. It is much more fun to be part of something than to do it alone- of course it's more fun to play with other people than to practice. I have had times in my life, though, when I loved to practice things. I think that is what video games give you- the satisfaction of mastery.

Why do you look so confused in your picture?

Joan,
I did know you had an iPhone. Now we can text for free - too bad you're on Sprint, or we could talk for free, too. I get iCloud, but I don't have an @me.com email address.

As for practicing, some things I've enjoyed practicing. The time has long since passed when that was the case with bass playing, though. Now, whenever I put it on, I just want to let it roll through me. I'm not looking for any mastery. And I don't play video games. Not that there's anything wrong with either of those things.

Alex,
Projecting much? You're the first person to look at that picture and see confusion.

Or maybe you just have excellent insight.

I was not confused when I took that pic, though. I took it myself, using a self-timer and a tripod. It has also been heavily processed with a photo-to-paint program I use.

Lovin' you both,
Ken
