How do you paint a perfect picture?

The punch line to this old joke setup is: Become perfect, then paint.

Truth in humor. Yet, I find myself interested in the idea of the perfect picture, or the perfect anything-else; just the idea of perfection.

When I consider perfection, I think about two notions: The concept of perfection and seeking it.

First, the idea of perfection: Something that is defined mostly by what it isn't: flawed. If I try and define it in a positive way, something is perfect when it is exactly, in all ways, as it should be. Of course, this definition assumes that a person can look at something and know (or decide) how that thing should be, in every way - which I believe is impossible, if only due to the limits of our senses.

To me, this means perfection is an illusion. On the surface, describing something as perfect  is a subjective construct without reality, telling us only about our internal processes, our ideas about perfection, not the properties of the 'perfect' thing.

So, do I seek perfection? Not too much, these days. I sometimes seek improvement, better utilization, better understanding, or just "more," but perfection? Tilting at windmills, that.

i love you both. Since fear is my big problem I appreciate this discussion. My biggest difficulty is my tendency to avoid situations in which I experience fear. When I do not avoid, I tend to be quite successful. The habit of avoiding is very strong and very rewarding when I do it so it tends to get reinforced continuously. I do keep on trying though.
Also, just to let you know: I am walking up the stairs rather than taking the elevator. So I walk two flights at the "T", then two flights when I get to work then as many flights as I can during the day. It seems to be helping my endourance and back pain. Love you
