July 7 2012: Post 543 (2012 Day 189) - Cheat Day
Daily Comment
Lately, I've been pooping out early.
Sometimes I get so tired, I fall asleep sitting up.
This recently caused me to fail to honor some commitments, and I find that deeply disturbing. I will be apologizing for the most recent lapse tomorrow, but I haven't been able to catch up with the other victim of my poor sleep habits.
I am not certain when my sleep hygiene went bad, but I suspect it is chronic - from early bad reading habits (reading in bed), to various periods of drug abuse (by which I mean too much drugs altering my sleep rhythm.
It got worse during the stress of my first marriage. There was a lot of strife, and it is during this time that I started grinding my teeth in my sleep.
Later, it became a matter of my schedule being in conflict with my emotional wants and needs. Having a day job and playing music frequently kept me out late at night, without being able to correspondingly slip my wake-up time to compensate.
I began getting less sleep. I never had trouble falling asleep. In fact, I would fall asleep abruptly, and quickly as soon as my head hit the pillow. How quickly I fell asleep became a joke with girlfriends and then my second wife.
Lately, it is simply not being able to easily wind down after playing in the evening. I have been able to get home early (relative to older days, when I would be out very late), only to find myself with an excess of 'nervous energy' which I try to dissipate watching TV or doing some cleanup from dinner, only to fall asleep in my recliner, waking up at three or four in the morning.
Then, the old version of my insomnia kicks in - not being able to fall back asleep. It usually takes one or two hours to fall back asleep. Which brings me to my weekends - when I usually don't get out of bed until lunchtime, or later. Friday nights, if I relax at all, I fall asleep very early - between eight and nine o'clock. If I don't wake up midnight, my evening is blown
Today, after my afternoon barbecue, I came home, wanting to go out at around ten. Somewhere around 9:00 or 9:30, I was down, and waking up just after eleven, I just couldn't think about going out, and my night was effectively over (I watched a movie).

I don't think I need to say that you need to regularize your hours- easiest way is to always get up at the same time
That 3 AM wakening is the old person's bane. We all do it( well, alot of us do). I try to do light therapy. getting enough light during the day helps and also dowsing the lights an hour before bed (especially blue lights.
But I have had sleep problems since I was a child and have had to live with them. That is why I go to bed so early. Then, if I wake at 3, I am okay. Love you
