I am blessed with having developed into a bass player who is at peace with his music. By which I mean, I know why I play bass, and, after all these years, my relationship with music and my instrument.I am not the best bassist I know, by a long-shot, and when I see someone who is technically at the top of the game, I am just as awestruck as someone who just picked up the bass yesterday, not 45 years ago.
But what I play, and the way I play it, is a perfect summary of what I've become - a journeyman bass player. There are few genres of music I'm uncomfortable with. And while I do not have a broad range of techniques at hand - I basically play finger-style, the way some of the early electric bass-players did, or, more rarely, with a pick (the way the other early electric-bass players did). More modern playing styles (meaning the ones that came to the fore in the last 25-30 years) like slap-and-pop, I don't do; mainly because I don't 'hear' bass like that in my head.
So, I do what I do. If you're another musician playing with me, that works or it doesn't, and I'm not sensitive about it: If your music demands something I don't do, you definitely need to get another bass player more in tune with your musical ideas. I'm easy with that.
I feel very fortunate to have found enough musicians who appreciate what I do to keep me playing regularly.
