The Rolling Stones sang, "You can't always get what you want, but if you try some time, you'll find, you get what you need."
I think that's a pretty true statement, but I think it implies that you will get what you actually need, which may or may not be what you think you need.
The Universe works in mysterious ways.
But what about the part that goes, '...if you try some time'? . It would seem that you need to make an effort based on what you want or need, which means you know what you need. But if your actual need is uncertain, if in fact you don't correctly assess the real need, how do you make an effort?
I think the point is that you move in the direction you think is right. I think it means you can't wait while the Universe conspires to meet your needs. You have to do something, stir the pot, as it were.
It is the sailing analogy: Wind-powered boats can't go in a straight line to a destination: They have to tack back and forth as they're making progress towards their destination.
If you think you need something, do something to get it. Doing nothing is not really an option, right?
Of course, wanting anything puts you in line for disappointment if you don't get it. Desire is the cause of suffering, according to Buddha.
It makes a good case for lowering (or, better, eliminating) expectations. This is something I believe in, too.
Probably the reason I'm such a shitty prospect for a 'relationship'.

Glad for the loss. It would have been better, I think, without the large amount of pepperoni and cheese I ate before and after dinner. But, you know, I did eat that stuff, and I guess that's just how I roll, these days. Dinner was very late tonight, since it had to wait until after rehearsal
