Daily Comment
I used to be a voracious reader of books, almost entirely fiction.
When I entered the corporate labor market, my non-fiction reading (e.g., training) increased, and my fiction reading decreased. Additionally, my interests at the time (audio and music) increased my reading of opinions (gray area between fact and fiction, IMHO).
Over the next twenty to thirty years, my fiction reading dropped off, and, not surprisingly, so did all my book reading. What I read was almost exclusively non-fiction.
Some of that was due to changes in my interests, and in my career. Some of it was due to starting a family. Some was due to an increased use of the internet, which I don't really consider it reading, any more than I consider watching TV to be reading.
My main input for fiction reading has come from my sister and my friend Lena. My sister has put me on to some excellent mystery novels. Lena is more science-fiction oriented (she became a sci-fi fan while we lived together for about 6 months).
I owe them a debt.
My recent convalescence got me back into reading fiction big-time, primarily as a result of my interest in expatriating to Thailand. In a conversation with an old friend's current partner, it turned out he had traveled extensively there, for a business he had exporting Thai art. He recommended a series of fictional mysteries set in Bangkok. I read the first three in the series during the nine days I was out of work, and then found out there were two more in the series (which didn't have "Bangkok" in the title).
The enjoyment I got from this led me to read yet another book from my sister, "The Yiddish Policemen's Union" by Michael Chabon. What a fantastic, hilarious writer! This was much slower-going (the book is longer, the writing is denser) than the other books, but very rewarding.
Now I'm back into it... I don't think I have any direction yet, but I'm back.

PS: The book I was talking about the other day was Robert Heinlein's "Stranger In a Strange Land." I was also going to write, along similar lines (and maybe more factually) about "Catch 22" by Joseph Heller and "The New Guide to Rational Living" by Albert Ellis and Robert Harper. Some other time.

Yesterday's fast seems to have helped. Even with the late-night snack. But today, and the long weekend coming up, that's another story.
It's going to be a big setback. I already threw caution (and any willpower) to the wind by the afternoon, when I went to work.
Work actually, for once, was stressful, and I had some cookies. Maybe it was the novelty. By the way, allow me, right now, to say how grateful I am for that afternoon stress, which reminded me of how good my life is these days, when I have the luxury of viewing a bit of job stress as a rarity.
Anyway, after that little cheat, when work was over, I ended up very hungry. I was running errands, which led me to eat a portable snack of pepperoni and cheese, which I had sworn off less than 48-hours earlier. That led to an instead-of-dinner cheat of a chocolate bar I had bought for the next day - cheat day. Finally, a late evening cheat of a giant bowl of cereal and fruit.
Total duration of this cheat was six hours - almost a whole cheat day of itself
