I am trying to untangle my needs and wants.Especially as regards to objects that I will have to dispose of, one way or another, when I start my retirement destination search.
Chief among the things that I need to exorcise are those items in the "luxuries experienced become necessities" category.
Fortunately, I have few luxuries. Those I have are mostly electronic in nature: A seven-year-old TV. A large-screen desktop computer (it's my main computer, but my laptop, which will be my main and only computer - or its decendent - is a communications necessity when you're travelling), are obvious examples. All my electric kitchen appliances, too.
It all has to go - books, CDs, "specialty" clothing, furniture, memorabilia - and it occurs to me that, Thoreau-style, anything that doesn't travel with me is, in fact, a luxury I've been treating as a necessity.
I have a little more than three years to declutter, and, ultimately nearly completely de-possess myself.
I'm looking forward to it - with some fear and trepidation, sure - but also with the certain knowledge that it will be a huge un-burdening.
Some of that burden, I expect, will be transferred where at some unknown future date, it may be accessed again. I'm thinking memorabilia here, and possibly some bass gear I will want to have with me in my new home.
But, other than that, I expect to reduce my possessions down to two suitcases and a backpack. I know that for some, even that is about one suitcase more than is required. Some are even more extreme. But that is the goal: Two suitcases and a backpack.
I like the sound of that.
