My weight dropped even though I ate a lot of calories yesterday. More anecdotal evidence debunking the calories in/calories out weight loss model.
The calories in/calories out model is an over-simplified equation. It assumes that at all times the body utilizes food energy as fuel for metabolic processes, and its simplicity makes it very seductive. But it is very bad science, since a variety of things left out of the equation (hormonal balance, inflammation processes, body composition, existing and developed physical disorders and digestive irregularities) can account for inconsistent results (like eating more and losing weight, eating less and gaining weight, or not changing calories, but changing macro-nutrient intake and experiencing a weight change).
The prevalence of the calories in/calories out weight gain/loss model for many decades has caused a huge amount of harm, in my opinion. It attracts a certain attitude towards the overweight - that it is their gluttony or laziness or both that is responsible for their being fat - that accomplishes two harmful ends: 1, it allows the overweight to be marginalized and 2, it allows hucksters to make billions of dollars off their guilt and grief over their situation by selling food that is not consistent with weight loss and by selling exercise equipment that is of only secondary importance to their weight.
