My retirement thinking today goes two places:1st and in many respects least, that I will probably retire at 65, without my full Social Security benefit. Better sooner than later, I'm thinking.
2nd, that Ecuador takes first place over Panama; Mexico, Belize, and Uruguay or Spain, France and Italy are third-tier choices for my retirement for one reason or another. Cost of living, retirement and residency ease, cultural life, and access to my Norte friends being the factors I am weighing.
It turns out that in Ecuador, foreign residents over the age of 65 are included in the government retirement plan, and that means really, really inexpensive and higher-quality health care than what I could get in the US, plus a bunch of benefits that flat-out don't exist here. As well as the option of living comfortably well within my fixed income.
Of course, until I can make some exploratory trips, it is all just dreaming. To me, this is exciting stuff...
My biggest problem with getting it together for retirement is how to dispose of my "stuff" since I don't intend to bring anything with me when I go.

Sounds exciting. I don't think I can think about this stuff til my kids are "launched" love you- did you see my comment on yesterday's log? joan
It is exciting. Yesterday, it kind of dawned on me - I'm 3 years and 2 months from retirement. If I leave the US.
All I have to do to maintain my enthusiasm for THAT is to read the news.
I will say this once (I've said it before), and then hold my piece on the matter: I think you have done pretty much everything a parent could do to "launch" your children. You've obviously done a great job. Now it is time to let them figure out how to get what they want in life through their own efforts, with your full support but less material in nature.
I did see your comments (they are emailed to me as soon as you make them - thank Google! - and I am very happy you appreciated my comments. Hopefully, you appreciate this one, too.
Love, Ken
