This is it, boys and girls. My one-year experiment is over. Successful. Many lessons learned. I did manage to nail the 200 pound thing.
Now the question is whether to continue in 2012. Maybe. I may stop with the daily weighing though. Maybe not, habits are hard to break.

Ken, your tenacity and discipline in this one-year experiment, as you call it, has been impressive. I've had my own weight-loss thing going on, inspired by a Type-2 Diabetes diagnosis, and though my diet is different from yours, reading your daily thoughts (not every day, but many) has been a source of encouragement. I've dropped below 200 lbs. for the first time in nearly 20 years and, along with being very carb-conscious, I've brought my average morning glucose number below 100. Continued success through the bumpy road of weight-loss. And great pic, btw. Who did it?
Dan,
First of all, Happy New Year! Next, thank you for reading my blog!
I applaud not only your successful efforts at weight loss, but the attempt. Good for you.
I don't think there is a best diet for everyone, although it looks like cutting out refined and processed foods may be the common denominator. Of course, I don't cut them out completely - I allow myself one day per week to not care. It has worked for me!
The takeaway from this year might just be that this blog was the most important part of my strategy. It kept my attention on what I was eating, and made me accountable.
The pic you like is from a (not very good) photo I took of myself with my phone at the Regional Market, and ran through a 'Photo to Cartoon' app (yes, that's the name of the app) and did some editing of the background.
Well, again, I hope 2012 is good for you, and hope you will keep reading. I intend to expatriate in 3 years (as I've said), and it should be interesting. I don't intend to begin my global life fat, and I will be slimming down my material prexence in preparation as well.
Ken, Happy New Year to you as well!
On the diet front, I'd have to say the most significant change was cutting back on carbs--starches and sugars. Not eliminating them entirely, as last night I had some Haagen Dazs vanilla ice cream, but only a quarter of a cup. I've also eliminated juice, sorry to say, as it was a love of mine, but do eat fruit. Portions overall have also decreased. Over the past few months I've begun exercising--nothing like I did when younger, but a big change from the past couple of decades(!). Diabetes offers one advantage for weight-loss: when you take daily readings you look at everything on a daily basis, serving as a great control. And it's the best reason for viewing this as a lifetime eating plan.
